WHY ARE FLOWERS BRIGHTLY COLOURED?

INTRODUCTION

  • A FLOWER IS THE REPRODUCTIVE PART OF A PLANT.

  • HAVE YOU NOTICED HOW SOME FLOWERS ARE BRIGHTLY COLOURED, WHILE OTHERS ARE NOT? THE REASON IS BRIGHT COLOURS ATTRACTS THE INSECTS THAT POLLINATE FLOWERS. POLLINATION IS THE PROCESS BY WHICH POLLEN FROM THE MALE PART OF A PLANT IS TRANSFERRED TO THE EGG IN THE FEMALE PART OF THE PLANT TO FORM A SEED. THE SEED HAS EVERYTHING THAT IS NEEDED TO FORM A NEW PLANT, SO, POLLINATION IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR A PLANT SPECIES TO SURVIVE.

  • AN INSECT IS GENERALLY ATTRACTED TO A FLOWER BECAUSE OF IT'S BRIGHT COLOUR, OR SWEET  FRAGRANCE. WHEN IT LANDS ON THE FLOWER TO DRINK THE SUGAR LIQUID CALLED NECTAR, POLLEN IS TRANSFERRED TO IT'S BODY, AND THIS POLLEN IS RUBBED OFF ON THE FEMALE PART OF THE FLOWER. FLOWER THAT ARE NOT BRIGHTLY COLOURED OR FRAGRANT ARE POLLINATED BY THE WIND-THAT IS, THE WIND CARRIES THE POLLEN FROM THE MALE PART TO FEMALE OF THE FLOWER TO FROM THE SEED.

REPRODUCTIVE PART'S OF FLOWERS:-

  1. A MALE REPRODUCTIVE PART OF A PLANT IS CALLED STAMEN.
  2. A FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE PART OF A PLANT IS CALLED PISTIL.

TYPES OF FLOWERS

  1. BISEXUAL FLOWERS=THE PLANTS WHICH HAS BOTH STAMEN AND PISTIL IS CALLED BISEXUAL
  2. UNISEXUAL FLOWERS= THE PLANTS WHICH HAS EITHER STAMEN OR PISTIL IS CALLED UNISEXUAL FLOWERS.
  • THERE ARE 2 TYPE'S OF POLLINATION:-
  1. CROSS-POLLINATION.
  2. SELF-POLLINATION.

CROSS-POLLINATION

  • IF A INSECT CARRIES POLLEN'S FROM ONE PLANT'S ANTHER TO A ANOTHER PLANT'S PTSTIL IS CALLED CROSS-POLLINATION

SELF-POLLINATION

  • IF A INSECT CARRIES POLLEN'S FROM A PLANT AND LAND'S ON THE SAME PLANT IS CALLED SELF-POLLINATION.

CONCLUATION

THE PROCESS CALLED POLLINATION IS THE MOST WANTED PROCESS TO PRODUCE NEW PLANTS.
